What is a Wabi Sabi Home?
“Wabi sabi goes beyond the beauty of any given object or environment. Wabi sabi is a feeling, and it is intangible. One person’s wabi sabi is not the same as another’s, because each of us experiences the world in different ways. We feel wabi sabi when we come into contact with the essence of authentic beauty-the kind that is unpretentious, imperfect, and all the better for that”.
-Beth Kempton, Wabi Sabi; Japanese Wisdom For A Perfectly Imperfect Life
It is our belief that this essence of beauty comes from adding elements of interest and history, it is the story that makes your house a home. We have long incorporated elements of “imperfection” in our own homes. We have found old doors, storied lights and unique antiques and have made them central pieces in our own homes. When we began remodeling houses for others, we wanted to stay true to what we love about the process. A spec home can be a beautiful thing but perfection rarely tells a story. Story and warmth lie in tying history to our present moment. The wabi sabi of your home, is the piece that makes your home unique because it is not perfect. Many of the pieces we have used have been in homes for hundreds of years and are just now building on their history with a new story that is all your own.
We carefully scour antique stores and flea markets to find the perfect pieces for a home. We cultivate the perfect space in a home to add character and build on the story you are already telling in your home or hope to tell in your fully remodeled home. A laundry table from a convent in France might make the perfect island with a few modifications, old Parisian apartment doors might make for a grand entrance into your bedroom, a light that is made by hand might cast a soft and warm light and a tiger wood door from Belgium might look amazing as a sliding bathroom door. No matter what you are looking for, we are committed to finding you the perfect piece to make your own personal wabi sabi space.
